Chapter 18
Steel Breath
FRANCIS HAD reluctantly taken the appointment. He did not want to allow the opportunity for frivolity with Sam, so Francis had his secretary pen the time for five p.m. exactly. Francis had his theories for Samâs subsequent meeting request so shortly after denial of auctioning the Kruppla within Plexus. Francis candidly admitted to himself that he was tired from the week, as well as the entailments with Sam. The thought of expulsion from Plexus had crossed his mind several times but knew he could not do so yet. Once a member was inducted, a suit of ejection required harm to Plexus, conviction for a felony, or a deliberate act which could be deemed reprimandable by Plexus overseer or vote. None of these predicaments were applicable to Sam thus far, but Francis was growing irritated with him and was waiting for an opportunity to rid Plexus of the splinter.
There had only been two members that were banished under Francisâ reign. One was a drunken vehicular manslaughter, and the other was a theft from another Plexus member. The former was a clear case for discharge, however the latter was quite involved. Two years after Irv recruited Francis to be the other dual head of Plexus, the theft of an Inca head mask was reported by a member. That was Francisâ first opportunity for leading a case which he had immediately got to work on. He soon uncovered an elaborately hatched scheme that was almost without fault. Francis discovered evidence of a feud between members to supply the motive and had entertained false laid trails before the deliberate sabotage destruction of the famed matrimonial head mask. Those six months of Francisâ life were the most intense he had ever experienced.
Francis personally spearheaded the effort. The quest had almost claimed his life three times, required Francis to hamper a police sting operation and conclusively pull the trigger of his Beretta and shoot the culprit. The aftermath took almost a year of litigation and resulted in the exoneration of Francis under the verdict of justifiable homicide. The entire endeavor was executed with tact and promptitude by Francis and gained him a legendary status among the entirety of Plexus, as well as respect from those across the blue line. Francisâ cigarette and mental reminiscence were abruptly interrupted by the piercing ring of his phone.
âFive oâclock sir, and no Mr. Rieves yet. Shall I stay for your appointment?â
âNo need, Sandra. Thank you for all your work today.â Francis trod his ember in deliberate fashion and casually grabbed his case for another.
âThank you, sir. Have a good evening.â
Without reply, Francis landed the phone back to its receiver and opened his bottom desk drawer for a necessary relief from the day. âNot even a chilled glass,â thought Francis as he poured a finger breadth of whiskey into the accompanying glass. âAlmost a crime.â
It was not long until Sam could be heard in the hall. Seconds later the knock came, and then the entrance of Sam. Francis gestured towards the open seat with professionalism.
